I found this story to be rather depressing all the way through. He told how he despised his own people's unfair culture. From having no choice about policing in India, he hated imperialism and wondered how it was upheld in the country when the people influence officers like him to shoot an elephant to avoid looking a fool. Though the situation is different, this is the same as when friends pressure others into doing something they don't want to do. Though, Orwell had to deal with hundreds of pressures instead of a few.
Nice job highlighting some key ideas from the piece. I think your connection to peer pressure is good one - certainly the giving over of personal will to the will of the group. How might this situation also be different? What does this situation make Orwell realize about Imperialism? How would you classify this piece of writing? Is he making an argument here?
