Laurence/Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki

As I read this article i felt a growing sense of dread at the destruction the atomic bomb would bring. Reading the article, I can understand the intense preparation and patience put into that one flight to drop a single bomb. What i found most vivid was how the author described the evolving cloud of color that was born from intense destructive light. He described it's evolution from the skyward purple flame pillar that topped into smoke that spread out into its mushroom shape. The contrast between the destruction that the author knew it would bring and the ethereal beauty that they witnessed at Nagasaki made me feel in awe.

  1. Dan -Yes, isn't that description amazing? I love how you pointed out the contrast between the description, which was beautiful, and the reality of the destruction it would bring. It makes it such a powerful passage. How would you describe Laurence's treatment of the subject? In other words, as a narrator, how would you describe his point of view and thoughts about the event he was witnessing?
